The Academy of British Cover Design (ABCD) would like to announce the opening of its 11th annual cover design competition.
ABCD ’24 is now open for covers produced for any book published between January 1 and December 31 2023 by any designer based in the UK, for a UK or overseas publisher.
Ebooks are admissible.
Designers may enter their own work or the work of other designers.
Entry is free.
All entries must be received by 31st January 2024.
A COVER CAN ONLY BE SUBMITTED IN ONE CATEGORY, UNLESS ENTERED AS AN INDIVIDUAL COVER AND AS PART OF A SERIES STYLE. If a cover is deemed unsuited to a category, then it may be removed at the judges discretion.
The competition will have ten categories:
Children’s 0-5, Children’s 6-12, Young Adult, SciFi/Fantasy, Mass Market, Literary Fiction, Crime/Thriller, Non-fiction, Series Design and Classic/Reissue.
The entries will be narrowed down to a shortlist of 6 books in each category, (except non-fiction, which will have a shortlist of 12 covers) by a committee of ten designers.
Final judging will take place at the ABCD’s awards night on the 7th March, with each person present able to vote for an overall winner in each category. A small prize will be presented to each of the ten winners. Entry to the event will be free and open to any book cover designer.
The Academy’s website will display the shortlisted covers and overall winners.
The Academy is committed to making the awards to be as inclusive as possible. Work that traditionally gets overlooked by other competitions despite being highly original, well executed and relevant will be recognised, because the judges (as fellow book cover designers) will be fully aware of the conditions in which the work was produced.
Images should be actual size, 300dpi with no bleed or border and saved as a jpeg. Please give each file the title: booktitle_coverdesigner. Series designs should be contained within a folder.
